XIX Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, 2015

Wednesday, November 4, 2015 – Santiago, Centro Leon – 8 pm

big band conservatory santo domingoThe Big Band Conservatory of Santo Domingo is under the direction of Javier Vargas, a musician, composer, musical arranger and Professor at the National Conservatory of Music, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Featuring Special Guests Jim Kelly, Jim Odgren and Jason Camelio, all from the U.S. The Big Band perform concerts in the style which was popular during the “Swing Era” of the 1930s to the end of the 1940s, and prevails to this day. The Big Band Conservatory is composed of a brass section of five saxophones, four trombones and five trumpets, and complemented by a rhythm section that consists of drums, percussion, piano, bass and guitar.

The Student Loan Stringband at Doug Fir Lounge1The Student Loan Stringband is a progressive-acoustic American newgrass project based out of Portland, Oregon. This innovative quartet’s diverse style transcends genre, fusing elements of jazz, blues, rock and jam with traditional bluegrass instrumentation. The group includes mandolinist Chad Kimbler, Guitarist, fiddler, and vocalist Liz Chibucos, Banjo player, vocalist, and guitarist Mark Gerolami and Julio Appling as a soloist.

roy assaf trioRoy Assaf is an Israeli jazz pianist, and graduate of the Berklee College of Music, and Manhattan School of Music. He lives in New York City and has toured the world playing prestigious festivals, clubs, and concert halls with the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars, and some of the world’s most influential contemporary jazz bands, including The Mingus Big Band, Roberta Gambarini Quartet and the David Sanborn Group, among others. In 2013, he formed the Roy Assaf Trio, which has performed across North America at venues such as The Blue Note and the Rubin Museum of Art. Their debut album, Second Row Behind the Painter, was released in May, 2014.

Manuel TejadaManuel Tejada: Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, musician Manuel Tejada studied at the National Conservatory of Music, specializing in education, orchestration and piano. Tejada is known as one of the best arrangers of his generation. As orchestrator, his extensive professional work includes collaborations with such famous Dominican artists as Juan Luis Guerra, Omar Franco, Olga Lara, Jacqueline Estevez, Taty Salas, Niní Cáffaro, and Anthony Rivers, among others. Recognized as an outstanding artist, he is the recipient of the XXVII Viña del Mar International Song Festival in Chile. Tejada has also composed soundtracks for feature films as well as advertising campaigns, creating a distinctive style merging Caribbean rhythms.

David SanchezDavid Sánchez is a Grammy-winning jazz tenor saxophonist from Puerto Rico, and is considered by critics as one of the best contemporary jazz saxophonists of his generation. Sánchez joined Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra in 1990, touring Europe and the United States, and continued playing with him until Gillespie’s death in 1993. Sanchez has released seven albums with Columbia Records, winning the Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in 2005.

Josean Jacobo Josean Jacobo, is a pianist, composer and arranger born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He studied Jazz Composition at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he had the opportunity to study with such jazz piano greats as Joanne Brackeen, Consuelo Candelaria and Mark Rossi. He will perform with his group Josean Jacobo & Tumbao blending rhythms from the Dominican Republic with jazz avant-garde, creating a unique style best described as Latin Jazz Nouveau.

john pattituci John Patitucci is a three-time Grammy Award winning American jazz double bass and jazz fusion electric bass player. He has played and recorded with the likes of B.B. King, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Nancy Wilson and João Gilberto. His first solo recording, John Patitucci, was number one on the Billboard Jazz charts. John is currently a Visiting Scholar at Berklee College of Music’s Global Jazz Institute.

mario canonge 01 Mario Canonge is a pianist from Martinique, F.W.I. He began his studies in Paris, and has established an international reputation as a brilliant virtuoso pianist. The Martiniquan star has an amazing ability to adapt his piano-playing to a wide variety of genres. Jazz, zouk, salsa, calypso, and reggae, Canonge can play it. Canonge has enjoyed a highly successful career working with an impressive array of singers and musicians, ranging from Latin, Afro-Cuban groups to accompanying sultry jazz divas.

Pengbian Sang and Retro Jazz feature top-rated musicians, including the exquisite singer Nairoby Duarte, and the distinctive Federico Méndez (guitar), Edgar Molina (percussion), Jesús Abréu (sax), Alvaro Dinzey (piano and vocals), and Ezequiel Francisco (drums).

Pedrito Martinez Pedro Martinez Group – Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez from Havana, Cuba, is a Grammy nominated percussionist. He was a founding member of the highly successful, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band, Yerba Buena, with which he recorded two albums and toured the world. Honors for Martinez include The Jazz Journalists Association “Percussionist of the Year”, 2014 and Modern Drummer Readers Poll #1 “Percussionist of the Year”, 2014.
